Our son Daniel and his Papa Fred have started a business of their own here at Shire Farms. Daniel has experimented and researched the idea of pastured rabbits, because around here we like things to mimic nature as much as possible - the way God made things to live.    Daniel and rabbit
bunnies! However, it seems a rabbit's natural ways do not lend themselves easily to raising them for profit. Leave it to a rabbit to escape our "tractors", or fenced pasture areas. Then again we have to deal with predators (rabbits have so many).
So we have come up with a compromise for the time being, although we will continue to investigate new methods. Daniel currently houses his rabbits in suspended cages under a sheltered area attached to our barn. We then often let our laying hens roam underneath the cages, scratching and pecking in the manure and straw mixture.
New Zealand White  This has a three-fold effect. First, the chickens just love insect larvae, and so they act as a natural pest-control. Second, the hens receive extra protein, though they have to work for it. Third, as the chickens scratch and mix the rabbit manure and straw, it enhances the composting program, and produces a fine, rich compost material.

When available, Daniel cuts fresh grass for the rabbits, and treat them to bits of carrots and celery. During the winter they receive a small amount of hay, and occasionally a block of dried alfalfa grass. We cut over-grown grass during the summer and dry it for rabbit hay, so it contains no pesticides or fertilizers. Daniel's rabbit feed contains no hormones, medications, or antibiotics.
Rabbit meat is all white, tender, juicy and flavorful.
