Pastured Chicken
No Hormones ~ No Antibiotics ~ No Medication ~ Fresh Grass ~ Sunshine and Exercise
Notice: We are currently only
raising broiler chicken to order. This means we don't
buy the chicks until you submit an order. Approx 8-10 weeks later,
your processed chickens will be ready for pick up. We don't raise
broilers through the winter (because there is no pasture!), so it is
best to think ahead and order enough to last you until next growing
season. If you don't have enough freezer space, we sometimes can
workout a "holding status" in which your birds are tagged and kept in
our freezers until you want more.

| "Pastured"
simply means free range of a pasture. Since our farm is our home, it is
difficult and not profitable to let the poultry have free range of our
entire yard and |
 |
| garden space. Instead we rotate our
flocks in large,
fresh pasture areas or mobile pens called "Tractors". Our birds have access to
fresh grass, air,
bugs, and sunshine everyday.
This is actually more beneficial than most "Free-range" systems, in
which birds are just packed into a warehouse. With the lack of
individual cages, they can be labeled "free range", but still do not
have the nutritional qualities of pastured chicken. In addition
to
pasture, our birds receive a supplemental combination of cracked corn,
oats, oyster shell, grit and our custom grind feed that contains no
antibiotics, medications, or hormones. |
All
commercial meat chicken come from one breed. Rather, it is a cross,
between the Cornish and Rock breeds of chicken, producing a hybrid
known as a "Cornish Rock X". They are specifically bred for their
|

|
large breast meat which
is found on no
other breed of chicken, and their incredibly fast grow out period (it
takes 8 weeks to reach maturity). Another name for the Cornish Rock X
is the Broiler Chicken. Though they are the same breed, our
broilers are more flavorful, juicy, tender, and leaner than your
typical broiler. All the results of a healthy lifestyle that includes
exercise, sunshine, and grass in a stress-free environment.
Because the Broiler chickens are bred to grow so fast,
they often have structural problems, and many go lame
in their legs. Commercial chicken farmers don't do much to counter
this, because the broilers are not required to walk. We feed our
Broiler chicks Brewers Yeast for growth support and fresh Garlic as a
natural immune boost, and have experienced great results. Our chickens
get healthy exercise and are not allowed to slouch around here! |

Eventually we have the
need to "cull" mean roosters and old hens. These were traditionally
used for "chicken 'n' dumplings" in the old days when this was an
everyday occurance. We recommend a long, slow "stewing", since their
meat is much less tender than |
the broilers. Makes a chicken soup not to be
beat! Old Jewish recipes used the chicken feet and head along with the
rest of the carcass to make a stock worthy of medicinal use(only included if requested in advance). The
benefits of the natural gelatin found in the bones are countless, and a
neccesity during the long winter months. Visit our Chicken Recipes page for more information!
*Processed birds come cleaned with neck
attached, but without organs, unless specifically requested.* |
